We can define the silicone oil as a liquid polymerized siloxane with organic side chains. These are very interesting polymers applied in multiple industrial sectors due to their relatively high thermal stability and their lubricating properties. This polymer is produced in a wide variety of viscosities, varying from liquid oils to semi-solid gummy. AITANA CHEMICALS guarantees its customers the supply of silicone oil adapted to the required viscosity.

Composition of silicone oil

Like all the siloxanes, the backbone of this polymer is based on silicon atoms and alternating oxygens. The polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the linear polymer of the dimethylsiloxane. The PDMS is the most widely used silicon-based organic polymer and is particularly known for its unusual rheological (or flow) properties. The polydimethylsiloxane is optically clear and, generally inert, non-toxic and non- flammable. The molecule of the PDMS has flexible polymeric chains due to its siloxane bonds, which are analogous to the ether bonds in polyurethane to provide it with elasticity. The flexible chains get entangled freely when the molecular mass is high, which gives the PDMS a high level of viscoelasticity. This process makes that at high temperatures or long flow times, it acts like a viscous liquid similar to honey. However, at low temperatures or short flow flow times, the silicone grease acts like an elastic solid, similar to rubber.

Silicone grease applications

The silicone oil (grease) is characterized by its adhesive properties, elasticity, resistant to bacteria, microbes, ultraviolet rays, water repellent, resistance to thermal changes. Its applications are very varied and range from:
  • preventative foams
  • defoamers
  • lubricants
  • cosmetics and skin preparations: its lubricating properties make it easier to brush and soften the skin. This lubrication provided by the silicone oil facilitates the application of the cream on the skin. Silicone oil, in this type of formulations, creates a film on the surface in which it is applied, whether it is our hair or the skin, which protects it from aggressor agents such as cold. Especially in skin products, this barrier also slows the leakage of moisture, so it acts as a moisturizer.
  • contact lenses and medical equipment
  • others

Conclusion

Silicone oil is a high level viscoelasticity polymer of application in multiple industrial sectors. Among the main properties of silicone grease is the high thermal stability and its large lubricating properties. AITANA CHEMICALS supplies its customers with silicone oil adapted to the required viscosity to the production process.
