What is ISO-NPG resin?

The name sums up its chemical composition: ISO stands for isophthalic acid and NPG for neopentyl glycol. It is an unsaturated polyester resin — a thermosetting polymer whose curing process is irreversible: once cross-linked, it cannot return to its initial liquid state.

It is produced by esterification of acids or anhydrides with polyhydric alcohols (glycols); subsequently, a monomer (typically styrene) is added to adjust viscosity and processing characteristics. The ratio between unsaturated components (which provide reactivity and stiffness) and saturated ones (isophthalic or orthophthalic) determines the final properties: higher unsaturation yields a more reactive and rigid cured polymer.

Additivation: MMA and other functional additives

To enhance the surface hardness and scratch resistance of the finished composite, ISO-NPG resin can be modified with MMA (methyl methacrylate). Depending on project specifications, UV light absorbers, antibacterial additives, wetting agents, and air-release additives are also incorporated. Resins can be supplied pre-accelerated or non-promoted.

ISO-NPG resin in solid surface manufacturing

ISO-NPG resin is one of the three core ingredients of “pure” solid surface. Unlike conventional orthophthalic resins, the chemical structure of the isophthalic polyester resin modified with NPG provides a denser three-dimensional cross-linked network that resists water penetration and chemical attack, preventing common field failures in humid environments such as washbasins, vanity tops, kitchen countertops, and bathtubs.

In composite materials manufacturing (solid surface), the liquid polymer matrix —which binds the aluminum trihydrate (ATH) mineral filler and pigment pastes for coloration— determines the final strength of the final product. ISO-NPG resin is the benchmark polyester matrix recommended for producing “pure” solid surface (compliant with ISO 19712:2013 standard) and ungelcoated sanitaryware.

  3. Increased Barcol Hardness & Scratch Resistance: Adding methyl methacrylate (MMA) increases the Barcol hardness of the cured composite, enhancing abrasion resistance and durability under daily wear and tear.
  4. Superior Chemical and Stain Resistance: Excellent tolerance to household detergents, commercial cleaners, mild acids, and alkalis, preventing staining or surface gloss degradation.
  5. Optimal Translucency and Color Clarity: Low initial base color in the polymerized state allows for pure white shades and accurate color reproduction when blended with concentrated pigment dispersions.

Orthophthalic resin is cheaper, but it absorbs more water and is vulnerable to thermal fluctuations. ISO-NPG resin (isophthalic with neopentyl glycol) provides significantly higher resistance to hydrolysis, thermal shock, abrasion, scratching, UV yellowing and chemicals. It does not degrade when exposed to household cleaning chemicals and prevents white hazing or cracking in wet conditions. Consequently, ISO-NPG is the required choice for high-tier solid surface products.

Adding MMA reduces the base viscosity of the liquid polyester matrix without compromising mechanical properties, enabling higher mineral filler (ATH) loading rates. Furthermore, MMA improves Barcol hardness, surface scratch resistance, and optical color depth.

Our standard ISO-NPG resin formulations include light stabilizers to protect parts from aging. However, for products subjected to extreme radiation or formulated in dark colors, we can further reinforce the resin with specific free-radical scavengers and light blockers.

While using an ISO-NPG resin alone does not automatically certify a finished product, its chemical properties are essential for ensuring that the cured solid surface passes the strict testing required by UNE-EN ISO 19712:2013 (resistance to humid heat, thermal shock, chemical stain resistance, color stability, and renewability).

Yes. Because it polymerizes with low intrinsic color and exceptional chemical resistance, ISO-NPG resin is the ideal matrix for solid, ungelcoated products (pure solid surface) that require full surface repairability via light sanding.
