Mold treatment and maintenance is the set of operations — cleaning, sealing and demolding — that keep the mold in optimal production condition throughout its service life. The mold: the asset you have to protect

In most industrial processes, the mold is the most valuable and hardest-to-replace asset. And yet, precisely because of its low cost within total production, mold treatment systems are not usually given the importance they deserve. This is a serious mistake that directly affects the profitability of the production process: good mold maintenance translates directly into higher productivity, a faithful replica of the part, fewer production stoppages and fewer quality problems in the final product. Managing the mold well is not an expense, but an investment recovered through a longer mold service life and a greater number of correct parts.

The three phases of mold treatment

High-performance mold treatment relies on three types of product that work together. None replaces the other; their value lies in using them as a system:

  • Cleaning: removing waxes, residues and production contaminants from the surface. It is the starting point. We cover it on our mold cleaners page.
  • Sealing: closing the micropores and irregularities of the mold surface. This is the phase that makes the difference and the most neglected one (we develop it below).

The sealer: the essential step almost no one applies

Here lies the key to good mold treatment. After cleaning the mold, and even before its first use, we always recommend applying a sealer. Why? Because cleaning exposes the micropores and small surface irregularities — often imperceptible to the naked eye — which are precisely the points where the part grips during the demolding process. The sealer closes these anchor points, both physical and chemical, and creates a transparent, flexible and highly resistant micro-film on the mold.

The result is twofold. On the one hand, it increases the safety margin against sticking, making demolding easier and more reliable. On the other, the sealer multiplies the effectiveness of the release agent and extends the mold’s service life. It is compatible with both water-based and solvent-based release agents. Skipping this step is the most common mistake in mold management, and the one that most undermines the performance of the release system.

Sealers for every type of mold

Not all molds or all processes need the same sealer. We offer different technologies depending on the substrate and the working conditions:

  • Broad-spectrum sealers: they create a transparent, highly resistant micro-film, suitable for a wide range of molds and substrates. They are the versatile option for most processes.
  • High-anchoring sealers: with reinforced adhesion to most substrates and high thermal stability, for more demanding processes.
  • Solvent-free water-based sealers: especially recommended for metal molds. Although their apparent penetration is lower, the crystallisation of their active compounds reaches the bottom of the micropores and creates a highly tenacious anchoring. They are the most eco-friendly option and offer the highest yield per litre.

None of our sealers cause transfer to the part or aesthetic variations on the mold surface, thanks to their strong adhesion to the substrate.

The maintenance cycle: how often to treat the mold

Mold treatment is not a one-off action, but a cycle. With normal use, we recommend a simple routine:

  • Thorough cleaning and full sealing: when preparing a new or freshly repaired mold, and periodically (usually two or three times a year, depending on use).
  • Refresh coats: on molds in use, a maintenance coat when the mold requires it, without the need for a full treatment.

This scheduled maintenance prevents unplanned production stoppages due to sticking or part defects, and keeps the mold productive for longer. Fine-tuning the exact routine to your process is part of our technical support.

Frequently asked questions about mold treatment and maintenance

They are two distinct, complementary phases. Cleaning removes dirt, waxes and residues from the surface; it is essential, but it exposes the mold’s micropores. Sealing comes afterwards: it closes those micropores and irregularities with a protective micro-film, so that the part does not grip and the release agent performs better. Cleaning without sealing leaves the job half done; sealing is what really prepares the mold for production.

Because the sealer is the step that delivers the most performance and the one most neglected. By closing the micropores and surface irregularities, it increases the safety margin against sticking, multiplies the effectiveness of the release agent and protects the mold, extending its service life. A well-sealed mold needs less release agent, accumulates less residue and produces higher-quality parts. It is the best investment in the management of a mold.

With normal use, a full sealing is recommended when preparing a new or repaired mold and, periodically, two or three times a year depending on the intensity of use. Between those full treatments, occasional refresh coats on molds in use are enough, when the mold requires them. The exact routine depends on the type of mold, the process and the release agent used; we fine-tune it with you during the trial phase.
